Constitutive Meeting of the National Association of the Playing Cities- GIONA

Saturday, 14th September 2002, at the Chamber of the Municipality Council of Gradara, the Constitutive Meeting of GioNa- National Association of the Playing Cities has been held.
After some months of debate and confrontation, the Province of Pesaro-Urbino, 4 Provincial Capitals: Torino, Ancona, Ravenna, Verbania, The Mountain Community Cusio Mottarone of Omega (VB) and 13 other towns: Bergantino (RO), Campodimele (Latina), Cattolica (RN), Gradara (PU), Jesi (AN), Minturno (LT), Omegna (VB), Ostuni (BR), Pioltello (MI), San Vito dei Normanni (BR), Saviano (NA), Senerchia (AV), Valle Salimbene (PV), have decided to launch, as promoter and charter members, the National Association of the Playing Cities, GioNa for friends.

GioNa proposes itself to coordinate the Authorities that have decided to invest in this very precious resource as playing is, “an activity by itself very pleasant which does not need any other aim than itself”, in the words of Kant (from his Critique of Judgement).

Playing, in its multiple forms and activities (toy-libraries, tournaments, museums, educational and training activities, game centres, celebrations….), is a key element for the quality of life and a resource which is often not appreciated enough. GioNa maintains and confirms this through its Manifesto.

A little as it happened for many years with other thematic town associations (from Wine to Oil), GioNa proposes itself to increase the value of playing, the game paths and events, the study and research occasions, the realization and development of top projects in the field of toy-libraries and game centres.

The birth of GioNa, which according to its statute is open to any motivated membership, aims at the coordination and revival of the several playing activities which are held on the national territory.

The small Municipality of Gradara, which hosts the Constitutive Meeting, has many merits in the field of playing: it is the location of Gradara Ludens, the most long-lived game festival in Italy, it has a Game Councillor (in the person of Arnaldo Cecchini), but above all it is at a few kilometres from the Rubicone, on the borderline between the Counties of Romagna and Marche: the ideal place the say then “the die is cast” and underline the beginning of a small important game for the future of playing in Italian Cities.
